Postpartum Fitness: How I’m Getting Back Into Shape

Everyone’s postpartum fitness journey is going to look a little different, and that’s okay. For me, getting moving again after being stationary for quite some time has been extremely important for my mental health. It’s also a goal of mine to get back into shape and achieve a body that I’m proud of. I want to be clear that I don’t feel pressure from anyone to ‘snap back’, but it’s something that I want for myself.

That said, I thought I would share my postpartum fitness journey. It’s very convenient to have a personal trainer as your partner when you’re trying to get in shape, and he has definitely been helpful in helping me understand what I am and am not capable of right now.

Lifestyle blogger Sammy Hill shares her postpartum fitness journey and how she is getting back into shape.

Workouts

To ease back into workouts, I started the BBG Postpartum Program. I’ve shared why I love BBG and the Sweat app before, and I knew that it would be best for keeping me on track. The first few weeks of the postpartum program felt very easy, but I also understood that my body probably needed that. Some people told me that they were shocked I was working out so early after having Mara. Trust me, the first few weeks were a lot less about lifting weights and more about lifting my feet off the ground…

The program includes resistance sessions, recovery sessions and low-intensity cardio sessions each week and it’s so easy to go in and check them off. The workouts were also tailored to someone who had had a C-section.

After the first four weeks of the BBG program, I also started doing workouts prescribed by my personal trainer, Kirby. We have been converting one side of our garage into a gym, so it’s easy for him to put me through a workout without us needing a babysitter.

Healthy Eating

Kirby really drilled it into my head that diet was the key to getting back in shape. As soon as we had gotten through all of the food that our friends and family had graciously dropped off, I was committed to eating well, minus the hard iced teas here and there since I hadn’t had them in about a year.

We started our New Parent Meal Plan and focused on eating healthy foods that would fuel us for most meals. I also ended up fasting without intending to thanks to Mara. I now fast for about 12-16 hours most days.

I’m not in a rush, but I am very happy to be active again and focused on some health and fitness goals post-pregnancy!
