How To Style 8 Pairs of Pants (That Aren’t Leggings)

We all love a good pair of lululemon leggings, and they can totally be dressed up for errands or a coffee date, but it’s time to step out of that comfort zone and play with some actual pants. As requested, I am sharing some tips on how to style pants that aren’t leggings for the winter to spring transition and beyond.

Dad Jeans

When wearing a dad jean, which is super high rise and relaxed through the thigh, you’ll want to wear something on top that highlights your waist. You can opt for a cropped style, tuck your top in or do a bodysuit and add a belt to your jeans. Not only are these jeans super comfy, but they can make your legs appear longer if styled properly.

Skinny Jeans

If someone tells you skinny jeans are out, ignore them. If you feel your best in skinny jeans, wear them! Skinny jeans can look super chic with a pair of pointed-toe heels and a fuller top. Pair your favourite pair of skinny jeans with an oversized button-down tucked in or a chunky knit sweater.

Knit Pants

I would argue that knit pants are the best alternative to your everyday leggings. These pants are super casual, but can be dressed up. You could do a matching set with sneakers and top with an oversized blazer or do a pair of cropped pants with a chunky sweater and some mules. If styled correctly, you can make these super comfy pants acceptable for brunch or maybe even the office if your dress code allows.

Faux Leather Pants

The ever-popular Spanx faux leather leggings are a classic, but let’s switch it up and do a faux leather pant! These pants can fit into your wardrobe as seamlessly as your favourite pair of jeans. Wear them with a bodysuit and blazer, a t-shirt, a cozy sweater, a blouse or even a matching faux leather shacket for a cool monochromatic look! For shoes, a white sneaker, a mid-calf boot, a pointed-toe or open-toe heel or a chunky loafer work great. There are so many options – this is a pant worth investing in.

Trouser

A classic pair of trousers are great for the office, but they’re not just for the office. A wide-leg trouser can be perfect for the workday with a slim-fitting sweater or cardigan, a chic blouse or a bodysuit and blazer combo. If you want to take these pants out of the office and out for brunch or shopping with friends, swap heels for some platform sneakers, tuck a t-shirt into your pants or choose a fitted crop top. If you’re willing to spend a bit more, the Aritzia Effortless Pant is a great investment.

Black Straight Leg Jeans

I love a good pair of straight-leg jeans and I also think that a black pair is a must in anyone’s closet. There are endless ways to style these versatile jeans and they can easily be dressed up for a night out or a date. A fun bodysuit, a statement belt and some pumps would be so cute for a date night. For a more casual look, a flannel and sneakers go well with these jeans.

Corduroy Pants

Corduroy pants are making their return! Wear this style in a neutral or pastel shade in a flared shape or rolled at the hem. You can wear these pants out shopping or running errands with a chunky knit cardigan or sweater, a cropped tee or tank or a fitted turtleneck for a fun 70s vibe. For shoes, a platform sneaker or some pointed-toe boots look great with this style.

Joggers

We talked about the sweatpants trend a few weeks ago and joggers are my favourite way to wear this trend. Joggers can be great for running errands, going for a walk or lounging around the house. You could do a matching set and top with a car coat or puffer jacket, or you could meet friends for coffee in your favourite joggers with a fitted long sleeve top or a crop top and flannel combo.
