Why I’m Writing My Goals Differently Now

Writing out my goals has always been something that brings me a ton of joy. NERD, I know. I love knowing what I’m working towards and being able to accomplish things that I’ve set out to do.

When I worked at lululemon, goal setting was a HUGE part of the job. We would do goal setting as a group, planning out our one, five and 10 year goals. Some of the goals that I set during that time included adopting a dog, working for an NHL team and purchasing a home, all of which I accomplished sooner than I had planned. Damn, that felt good!

Recently, I read a blog post by Camille Styles about a goal setting technique that she uses called “future bio”. I loved the idea of this type of goal setting, in which you write a third-person biography about yourself in the future. I often find myself listening to podcast interviews and thinking about what I would like to say if I were interviewed, so I was all in on trying this “future bio” technique.

Here is just a snippet of my five-year “future bio” that I am working on!

Sam is a multi-hyphenate entrepreneur, blogger, wife and mom. She has built her personal blog, SammmyHill.com, into an established brand that houses her lifestyle blog, collaborations and physical product line. The brand offers an attainable and practical way to enjoy a luxurious, west coast lifestyle.

Sam manages a small team that helps to run the brand smoothly, while she balances her role in her husband’s business, two little ones and a healthy lifestyle, as well as the many new projects that she has coming up, including a product line of her own that is set to launch this year.

Sam and her husband are in the process of building their dream home in the mountains, complete with a home gym and a hot tub. They already own and manage two other properties.

Health and wellness are a big part of Sam’s life. She maintains a fitness schedule of five days per week, eats well, but still indulges in her favourite treats, and she includes physical and mental wellness into her daily routine.

And she still loves her daily walks with Odie!

It’s kind of scary to put this out in the world! The truth is, you never know what five years from now is going to look like, but having some SMART goals and plenty of grit and determination can help to ensure that one day, someone is reading your “future bio” as your present bio.

Some SMART goals that I am putting in place to work towards these goals are:

  • Grow SammmyHill.com pageviews to 20,000 per month by December 2020
  • Employ one FT employee by August 2021
  • Purchase second property in Kelowna by December 2022
  • Identify product line opportunity by May 2023
  • Purchase land to build home on by January 2024

One step at a time, I’ll work towards this future bio coming to life! These goals will help to keep me on track for the life that I want to be living five years from now.

It’s important to remember that sometimes life gets in the way of our perfectly drawn out plans, and occasionally it’s in your best interest to go with the flow and adjust your course. Your future bio may not sound exactly how you planned it five or ten years from now, but that’s okay. If you’re open and willing to put in the work, it may even sound better!

Give it a try and let me know what your future bio sounds like. ?

You are amazing! Our past usually is an indication of our future! With your determination your future vision will come true.
I should work on mine. I am scared to do so because then I can’t postpone and I will be accountable!? I am procrastinator!

    • Oh thank you Nilou! I procrastinate plenty too, but it feels good to know where I’m going and it motivates me to take the steps to get there. Let me know what your future bio looks like when you do it!
