Small Business Spotlight: Supercrush

Leading up to the 2020 Holiday Season, I will be introducing you to some of my favourite small business owners. They will be sharing some background about their business, advice that they have for aspiring entrepreneurs and some suggestions for thoughtful Christmas gifts.

Supercrush: Courtney Peters

Scrunchies are a girl’s best friend, and Supercrush makes the cutest scrunchies in tons of different fabrics and colours. They really make it easy to throw your hair in a bun and get sh*t done.

I interviewed the founder of Supercrush, Courtney Peters, and we chatted about how the brand came to be, advice for budding entrepreneurs and the perfect holiday stocking stuffer!

when and why did you start your business?

Well to be honest, I never set out to start a business. Supercrush began as an idea to just make scrunchies one night with a few friends. I posted about them on Instagram, wore the scrunchie to work the next day, and it generated a lot of interest. Friends and family started asking if they could buy them so I enlisted the help of my mom, Shelby to help me sew. After a week of trying to keep up with demand via Instagram, we put together a website in a weekend and began to sell online. Fast forward to now…we’re a team of 15 and our products are sold in 50+ stockists across Canada and the US.

what has been the biggest milestone in your business to date?

Being able to transition this business from a side hustle to a full-time career for both my mom and I has been a significant milestone. Something that happened recently that our team is really proud of is that we’ve been able to raise $20,000 (and counting!) for Union Gospel Mission through our face mask fundraiser.

where do you see your business in the next five years?

Well, if there’s anything I’ve learned from 2020, it’s that the world changes fast and it’s hard to predict what’s going to happen in a month let alone 5 years! But in general, we’re looking to continue to scale our business and grow our team. We’re also excited about product development…we have lots of ideas brewing!

what advice would you give to a budding entrepreneur looking to take the leap?

Realize that the moment of absolute certainty will never arrive. If you want to start something new, you have to be prepared to take a leap of faith. One of the most necessary requirements for any entrepreneur is to have the commitment to always move forward and to have the confidence that you’ll be able to figure it out. Oh, and get ready to hustle!

what is something that you think is a common misconception about owning a small business?

There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes and 90% of it is never seen. Entrepreneurs wear so many hats (many which don’t always fit you that well, lol) but it’s up to you to figure out how to make it work. But honestly, the late nights, the tax spreadsheets, and the tremendous stress are so worth it when you’re creating something out of nothing. Building a brand is so rewarding.

what is one personal goal that you have right now?

Well, next spring I’m going to become a mom (eek!!) so I guess my goal right now is figuring out to prepare for that in addition to figuring out what balance in my business will look like. I’m sure it will take some time to figure out, but I’m so excited for this next phase of life!

what is your favourite Supercrush piece to gift?

Anything from our Holiday Collection as they’re all curated specifically for gifting! Specifically, I love velvets this time of year cause they’re so dreamy and luxurious. You’ll be in the holiday spirit right when you put one in your hair, I promise 😉

If you ask me, a Supercrush scrunchy is the perfect stocking stuffer for the ladies in your life! They also make adorable headbands and chic face masks, and I can’t wait to see what other products they’ll be coming out with in the future.
