How To Spruce Up Your Patio On A Budget

Who doesn’t love patio season? I spend most of my time from March/April to October out on my patio, so I like decorating it in a way that is inviting and functional. It’s more of an outdoor living room than anything else. That said, patio furniture and decor can cost an arm and a leg, so I thought I’d share some tips on how to spruce up your patio on a budget.

Patio furniture that doesn’t break the bank

When you’re shopping for a good patio set, it can feel like a pipe dream, but there are more and more cute, affordable sets coming out from retailers like Walmart, Target, World Market and Wayfair. I still dream of a Crate & Barrel patio sofa, but I don’t have $4,000 for that!

I got my current patio lounge set from Walmart.ca for just $600. I’ve been checking back each day for the sectional that goes with it as well, but they have been in and out of stock. It’s the perfect size for our breezeway!

Here are a few other affordable patio sets that I’m loving.

Add greenery and flowers to fill the space

An affordable and easy way to spruce up your patio space and fill in gaps to make it feel more like a living space is to add greenery and flowers in cute planters. I added these beautiful, tall planters with a custom arrangement of silvery green and deep purple plants from Better Earth Gardens to our patio this spring. I love the colours and how they add some life to the space!

Define the space with an outdoor rug

I personally could not spend a ton of money on an outdoor rug because I know my dogs would ruin it before we really got use out of it for the money. It’s not hard to find an affordable outdoor area rug though. I like one made of durable material in nice neutrals that defines the living space where your patio furniture is set.

Here are a few outdoor rugs I’m into.

String lights make all the difference

A string of outdoor lights just sets the vibe, doesn’t it? We love plugging in our string lights when we’re sitting outside by the gas fire pit in the evenings. I believe my set is from Costco, but I also like these lights and these lights.

Layer textures for maximum coziness

Whether you’re trying to beat a spring chill or you just want a nice, cozy vibe on your patio, layering different textures can do just the trick. Thin, gauzy blankets, chunky and plush rugs, mud cloth pillows and woven baskets for storing throws, pillows and more are great textures to play with our your patio. You can find lots of affordable options at HomeSense/HomeGoods, but I’ve linked a few options here.

Finish with accessories

If you really want to make your patio truly an outdoor living space, you can add in accessories that are functional and match the vibe. Bar carts, lanterns, fire pits and decor can really give your patio on a budget a lived-in look, and you don’t have to spend a ton on them either.
