How To Properly Prep Your Yard For Fall

How To Properly Prep Your Yard For Fall
Now that the interior of our home has basically been renovated top to bottom, we can finally focus on our yard.
We have big plans for the exterior of our home next year, including painting the house, replacing some planter boxes and creating an outdoor living space. For now, we’re focusing on taking care of our yard in the fall to prepare it for a beautiful spring. Here are a few tips from Better Earth Gardens to prep your yard for fall.

Plant trees, shrubs and perennials

Believe it or not, fall is the best time to plant. The days are cooler and the plants are getting themselves ready for winter. This means they will be putting their energy into growing bigger and stronger roots, rather than growing leaves and blooms. There is also much less watering needed when you plant in the fall.
Better Earth Gardens has a large assortment of trees, shrubs and perennials available that you can plant this fall. We are planting Dwarf Hinoki Cypress shrubs that will grow in nicely in the spring!

Trim and Clean Up Existing Perennials, Trees & Shrubs

Cleaning up your trees, shrubs and perennials is a great idea to stop the growth and prevent insects and mites creating homes that can infect your plants. Most perennials need to have their foliage cut back as they die off in late fall. There are many great reasons to removing all this dead foliage, and using the right tools is key. Better Earth Gardens has a huge selection of affordable tools at the greenhouse and can help with picking the right one to tame your yard this fall!

Cut & Fertilize Your Lawn

Cutting the grass is one of Kirby’s favourite activities, so he’ll be more than happy to keep mowing the lawn into the fall!
Your lawn will slow its growing come fall time, but Better Earth still recommends to keep cutting your lawn until it has completely stopped growing. Fall is the perfect time to fertilize, as your lawn will slow its top growth, but continues to grow its roots. The team at Better Earth highly recommends using Ground Keeper Lawn Fertilizer. You can read more of their lawn care tips in this post.

Plant Bulbs

Who doesn’t want some nice spring colour! Now is the time to plant bulbs that will bloom beautifully come spring. Plant them in containers or right into your flower beds, and don’t forgot Bulb Food.

Clearing Weeds

I don’t know why I’ve never thought of this. For some reason, I always choose the hottest days of summer to get outside and pull weeds.
It is a great idea to pick weeds in the fall. If we let weeds die off for the winter they will still come back, and they will come back stronger.
It may be a bit dreary outside, but if you put the time and effort in and properly prep your yard for fall, your flowers, trees, shrubs and lawn will all thank you come spring time.
