I’ve been so excited to renovate our kitchen, but now that the time is here, I’m kind of freaking out. We are officially underway, so I thought I’d share a kitchen renovation update.
The original kitchen in this house was closed off from the rest of the house, other than the dining room, and it featured a retro double wall oven, pinky-beige cabinets and a white/green laminate countertop. It was kind of galley style and just not super functional for us.
We wanted to open up the wall between the kitchen and living space, and the only way to do that was to relocate the kitchen. Because of the layout of the walls, opening up the center wall would leave us no space to put a fridge, unless we moved all of the other appliances. After trying about 50 different layouts with tape on the floor, we decided that we should close in the big, beautiful sliding door in the dining room (sob) and turn that space into our kitchen.
I never thought I would be so attached to a door, but letting go of that gorgeous slider was SO hard! We’ve now framed in the new wall and window, and we’re putting a single door in over where our sink used to be to access our breezeway and backyard.
We’re completing our cabinet and countertop orders this week and in a little over a month, we should have a beautiful kitchen in this space! We went with a grey-green cabinet colour, brass pulls and a white quartz countertop. Our appliances are black stainless steel and the sink and faucet are also black. Next, we need to source our wood shelves and a new lighting fixture!
The gas fitter and plumber will be in this week to prep for install, and once the kitchen is close to ready, we’ll be turning the center wall into a huge archway.
I’m so excited for a new kitchen, but I’ll never forget how unique (and ugly) the first kitchen I ever purchased was!
To see some of the inspiration we pulled from for the new kitchen, check out this post. I will have a new kitchen renovation update around the beginning of July and will be sharing the progress on Instagram!
