Micro-Needling 101: What You Need To Know

Of all of the treatments that I’ve done at Smooth Effects Kelowna, the micro-needling treatment was by far the most intense. It also led to the most noticeable results that I’ve seen in my skin.

First things first, Alexis applied a numbing cream to my face and let it sink in for 20 minutes. Once my face was good and numb, she applied a hydrating gel and began the micro-needling.

Micro-needling 101

A pen-like tool is used and the technician will adjust the depth of the needling during the treatment for different spots on your face. The cheek area can handle needles that create deeper punctures, but smaller punctures should be done on the forehead.

I would say that the only spot that kind of, a little bit stung with the micro-needling was just above the outer corner of my eyebrows. Everything else felt fine, and in some cases tickled.

After Alexis finished the micro-needling, she put a hydrating sheet mask on my face to calm and hydrate my skin a bit.

Now this is the part that you need to be prepared for – I looked in the mirror afterwards and my face was SO red. It looked and felt like I had a gnarly sunburn. Alexis let me know that for some people the redness lasts a few hours and for others it’s a few days. For me, the redness was completely gone by the next day.

My instructions post-treatment were to cleanse my face with water 2-3 hours later and not apply any products to my face for the rest of the day, and no makeup for 48-72 hours. Alexis did say to apply lots of moisturizer the day after the treatment to re-hydrate. She also warned me to hold off on applying retinol products for a week or so.

So, what were the results that I saw?

The next day I noticed that the very red, active zits that I had had the day before had been significantly minimized. They had dried out, were visibly less red and within the next few days, disappeared.

I also noticed that the pores on my cheeks especially appeared smaller, and the skin around my cheek bones felt tighter.

Since the treatment, I’ve been applying moisturizer regularly to rehydrate my skin and I’m happy with how it’s looking!
