I’m a huge fan of family traditions, and especially Christmas traditions. I love looking forward to traditions that I can count on each year, and creating new traditions is one of my favourite things to do around the holidays.
Kirby and I have been talking about what Christmas traditions we want to start or to carry on, including traditions that we’ll have when we have a family of our own one day. Some of these rituals have come from our childhoods, and others we’ve dreamt up together.
Christmas Eve Ornament Exchange
One tradition that Kirby and I are starting together this year is to gift each other a special Christmas Eve tree ornament. Our tree is pretty bare, other than a few ornaments I’ve purchased from Michaels or Indigo, so this tradition will be something sweet for the two of us and it will help to fill out our tree over the years.
Family Christmas Wreath
Speaking of ornaments, my extended family started a new tradition this year with a family wreath filled with an ornament for each of us. At our family Christmas party, we each decorated our own ornament and hung it on a huge wreath. This wreath will travel each year to whoever’s house hosts the party, so that all of us can be there in some way. With 45 family members and growing, this wreath is freaking full!
Making Grama’s Butterballs
The kitchen is not where I thrive, but when it comes to making butterballs, no one does it like I do, except Grama! My Grama’s butterballs are little balls of chocolatey goodness, covered in icing sugar. She would not be pleased if I shared her recipe, but I can tell you that they are delicious and that this is a tradition that I will carry on every single Christmas.
Christmas Eve Pajamas
Every Christmas Eve, I look under the tree for a new set of pajamas. My mom has always gifted my sister and I with a set of Christmas Eve pajamas, and I plan to do the same when I have children one day. I shared a few of my favourite Christmas PJ sets here on LIKEtoKNOW.it.
